About Faculty

The Faculty of Biomedical Engineering (FBMI) was established on December 24, 2002. The first dean of the faculty (2002-11) and co-author of the concept of training engineering personnel for the healthcare system was Valentin Yatsenko. In 2011-22, the faculty was headed by Vitaly Maksymenko, who has a leading role in establishing biomedical engineering as an educational field in Ukraine. The faculty is headed by Alexander Galkin from 2022, continuing the development of both traditional and modern biomedical engineering and technology areas.

The faculty trains specialists in the modern specializations of biomedical engineering, medical and biological informatics and cybernetics, and physical rehabilitation. About 130 highly qualified professors and leading scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, among whom two professors are honored workers of science and technology of Ukraine, 15 doctors of science, 20 candidates of science, train students at the faculty.

The educational concept of FBMI is a combination of engineering, technological, information, and medical and biological components. In addition to the traditional and generally accepted disciplines at the technical university, students are offered to master the Latin language and medical terminology, mathematical modeling of physiological systems, telemedicine, medical device engineering, development of artificial biological objects, biomaterials, etc.

Students of FBMI undergo industrial practice in leading scientific institutions, medical and preventive facilities, and production enterprises in Ukraine and abroad. Faculty graduates work both in Ukraine and abroad, occupying the positions of leading specialists – biomedical engineers and technologists, software developers, and scientists.

According to the results of 2021, the faculty took first place in the magazine “Forbes Ukraine” rating list among the faculties of medicine.

The faculty consists of five departments; four of them are graduating departments:

Department of Biomedical EngineeringSpecialty “Biomedical Engineering”
Department of Translational Medical BioengineeringSpecialty “Biomedical Engineering”
